Annual Great American Smokeout began in the 1970s.
In the 1980s and 90s, state and local governments responded by banning smoking in workplaces, restaurants, raising taxes on cigarettes, limiting cigarette promotions, discouraging teen cigarette use, and more. These efforts continue today.
